If something about SSEM Markdown Editor isn’t clear, please check the questions below and the User Guide first. If that doesn’t help, email us.

Please include your Chrome version (chrome://settings/help), the extension version (SSEM Markdown Editor at chrome://extensions), your operating system, and which file you opened and how (web address or a file on your computer). A small Markdown sample that shows the problem helps a lot.
Please don’t send confidential documents or personal information. A minimal example that reproduces the problem is enough.
Frequently asked questions
A .md file on my computer shows up as plain text.
By default Chrome doesn’t let extensions access file:// addresses. Go to chrome://extensions › SSEM Markdown Editor Details, turn on Allow access to file URLs and reload the tab. See the guide for step-by-step instructions.
It doesn’t work on GitHub’s README page.
File pages on github.com have already been turned into HTML by GitHub, so the extension stays out of the way. Click Raw to open the raw address (raw.githubusercontent.com/…) and it renders. On other sites, too, it works only where the server sends the raw Markdown text.
I see an error or code instead of a Mermaid diagram.
Check that Mermaid is on under Plugins in the popup and that the code block’s language is mermaid. If it still fails, the diagram most likely has a syntax error. Wrap labels containing brackets or special characters in quotes, like A["Label (note)"]. Since 1.0.2 the extension uses Mermaid 10, so quadrantChart, mindmap and timeline work too.
My edits aren’t saved to the original file.
Browser extensions can’t overwrite files. Download your edits with Ctrl/⌘ + S or the download button and replace the original. If you close or reload the tab without downloading, your edits are lost.
My changes keep reverting while I edit.
With Auto Refresh on, Viewer mode refills the page from the original file. Edit in Editor or Split mode, or turn auto-refresh off in the popup or with Alt + Shift + R.
I want to see the plain text for a while.
Turn off Enable in the settings popup and all Markdown pages show in the browser’s plain view; turn it back on to render again. For a quick look at the source you can also use Editor mode (Ctrl/⌘ + E).
A shortcut doesn’t work or clashes with another one.
Check and change SSEM Markdown Editor’s shortcuts at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. If another extension uses the same combination, only one of them gets it. On a Mac, Alt is the ⌥ Option key.
Is it available for Firefox or Safari?
For now it’s available only on the Chrome Web Store. Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge can often install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, but we only test in Chrome.
How do I remove the extension?
Right-click the toolbar icon and choose Remove from Chrome, or click Remove at chrome://extensions. Settings stored in the browser are removed too. After removal, Chrome opens the developer’s web page once.
